Delta State Ministry Of Transport Slammed At Budget Presentation

Delta House of Assembly Committee on Transport has expressed displeasure over the budget presentation by the State Directorate of Transport.

Chairman of the committee, Hon Festus Okoh stated this on Wednesday in Asaba when the directorate, led by the Commissioner, Mr Onoriode Agofure, appeared before the committee to defend the 2024 budget.

Okoh frowned at the inability of the Directorate to furnish the committee with relevant information, especially in the areas of revenue generation and budget performance of the outgoing year.

”The documents I have before me have lots of faults and errors. The percentage of budget performance for the outgoing year is not also reflected in the documents,” he said.

Hon Okoh who represents the Ika South Constituency and Deputy Majority Leader of the House, said there must be an improved budget performance in the 2024 fiscal year.

A member of the committee, Austin Uroye noted that the Directorate failed to present accurate and detailed information, even as he assured that the committee would look into the documents and make necessary corrections.

Earlier, the commissioner, Mr Onoriode Agofure had told the committee that the sum of N4.6 billion was the Capital budget for the Directorate in 2023.

Agofure disclosed that the Directorate generated the sum of N55.4 billion from January till date.

In the 2024 fiscal year, the Commissioner said that the directorate is proposing the sum of N350 million for the provision of road traffic and warning signs across the State, adding that the old ones had been vandalized.

Agofure also said that the directorate would construct and rehabilitate some jetties in the riverine areas of the State, saying that this would help to boost the infrastructural development of the rural areas.

He told the committee that the Directorate intended to train drivers, adding that the training of drivers was vital.
