Anambra Police Reject Extortion Allegations Against Senior Officers, Restate Anti-Corruption Stance

The Anambra State Police Command has dismissed allegations circulating on social media that senior police officers benefit from extortion allegedly carried out by personnel deployed at the Onitsha Bridge Head, describing the claims as inconsistent with the values and operational standards of the Nigeria Police Force.

In a statement issued on Saturday, the Command’s Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said the leadership of the Command remains committed to professionalism, accountability and ethical policing, stressing that no act of extortion or misconduct is sanctioned by the Command.

Ikenga said the conduct of every police officer reflects his or her personal character and commitment to the ethics of the policing profession, noting that any officer found engaging in unprofessional conduct would bear personal responsibility for such actions.

“The Command wishes to state unequivocally that such allegations do not reflect the values, standards and operational principles of the Nigeria Police Force. The pride and fulfilment of every senior and supervising officer lies in leading teams that operate professionally, lawfully and with integrity,” he said.

According to him, the Anambra Police Command has maintained a zero-tolerance policy against corruption, extortion and other unethical practices, adding that every credible complaint received from members of the public would be thoroughly investigated.

He assured that officers found culpable would face appropriate disciplinary measures in line with the laws and regulations guiding the Nigeria Police Force.

The Command called on residents to report incidents of police misconduct with verifiable details, including the date, time, location, vehicle registration number and, where possible, the identity of the patrol team involved.

It urged the public to channel complaints through the Command Control Room, the Police Public Relations Office or the Complaint Response Unit (CRU), noting that such information would enhance ongoing monitoring and accountability mechanisms.

The Command reaffirmed its commitment to transparent, accountable and people-oriented policing and appreciated Ndi Anambra for their continued cooperation and constructive feedback in strengthening public trust and improving service delivery.
