The Anambra State Police Command has dismissed allegations that its personnel demanded N600,000 for the release of Miss Nwosu Chikamso Jennifer, describing the claim as a diversionary tactic capable of distracting investigators from the ongoing probe.
The command said its investigation into Nwosu’s alleged involvement in a case concerning the death of a victim remained ongoing, insisting that the police would not be distracted by allegations of monetary demands for release.
The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Ikenga Tochukwu, disclosed this in a statement issued in Awka on Wednesday.
According to Ikenga, Nwosu, during interrogation conducted in the presence of her lawyer, denied communicating with the suspect for more than five years.
He, however, said information obtained by investigators indicated that Nwosu and the suspect communicated on the night of the incident.
The PPRO said the communication under investigation allegedly included information relating to the death of the victim and an alert to the suspect that the police were closing in on him.
He said, “The Police cannot be distracted in our investigation by diversionary tactics of accusing the police of collecting money for release.
“During interrogation, conducted in the presence of her lawyer, Miss Nwosu denied communicating with the suspect for over five years.
“However, information available to investigators indicates that she and the suspect communicated on the night of the incident.
“The communication under investigation included information concerning the death of the victim and an alert to the suspect that the Police were closing in on him.”
The command maintained that the allegations of a N600,000 demand would not deter investigators from pursuing all relevant leads and establishing the facts surrounding the case.
Ikenga urged members of the public to avoid drawing conclusions capable of interfering with an ongoing investigation, assuring that the command would continue to act in accordance with the law.
