NEXIM Bank Director escapes death in Agbarho, many injured in Abraka mayhem

EXECUTIVE Director of Nigerian Export-Import Bank, Stella Okotete at Agbarho in Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State escaped death from the hands of suspected political thugs while  campaigning for her party.
Several persons were said to have been injured and one of the thugs was arrested in the melee as over five vehicles of both parties were allegedly destroyed.
Okotete, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in company of other supporters of the party, had embarked on a ward to ward campaign for the APC in the area, when the hoodlums strucked.
Speaking on her ordeal, she said: “We were embarking on a ward to ward campaign in Ughelli-Agbarho area when all of a sudden a branded van of awareness political party, (name withheld) with thugs accosted us, started destroying glasses of the cars in the convoy and attacking people.
“We were lucky as I had my STU police team that came with me from Abuja, who overpowered the thugs and apprehended the driver of the car while others ran away.”
A security source who spoke to the Urhobo Voice on anonymous condition alleged that one of the branded vehicle belonging to one of the political parties was stationed before the attack.
The security source held that, the driver of branded vehicle was about entering his car when he was attacked and he escaped to Agbarho police station to Incident the case and he was later arrested after the other party had gone to same station to indict him as one of  the culprits.
The attack on the NEXIM Bank director occurred the same day scores of persons at Abraka, Ethiope East local government area of the state also sustained various degrees of injuries following a clash by supporters of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, PDP in the state and the members of the APC.
According to sources who witnessed the fracas at Abraka, the melee was said to have started at a pub after a member of the APC was allegedly beaten up by some PDP faithful who considered him as a “trespasser” having strayed into the said pub described as a PDP bar.
The source who spoke on condition of anonymity, said: “Angered by this act, members of the APC, mobilized in protest and randomly attacked known members of the PDP in the area including innocent bystanders leading to causalities on both sides.
“They took their anger further and destroyed bill boards of both political parties”
Confirming the attack on NEXIM Bank director, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Andrew Aniamaka said, “Invariably, one of the suspects, Edward Okpako was arrested in connection with the unfortunate incident and we on the matter but the case will be brought to the Criminal Investigation Department, CID for discrete investigation.”
