IGP Disu Moves To End Retired Police Officers’ Woes

Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has stepped up efforts to address the lingering welfare challenges facing retired police officers, as the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu moves to clear outstanding arrears and improve retirement benefits.

The initiative, under the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope agenda, is aimed at improving the post-service welfare of former personnel of the Nigeria Police Force, reducing payment delays and ensuring a more efficient pension administration system.

As part of the efforts, President Tinubu reportedly constituted a high-level committee comprising representatives of the Ministry of Finance, Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation, Budget Office, National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission, and the National Pension Commission (PenCom) to develop sustainable solutions to the challenges.

The committee is expected to recommend measures to facilitate the settlement of outstanding entitlements and strengthen the administration of retirement benefits.

Meanwhile, the police authorities are undertaking a nationwide verification exercise to update the records of retired personnel, correct discrepancies in existing documentation and ensure that eligible beneficiaries are properly captured in the system.

Disu stressed the need to prioritise the welfare of police officers beyond their years of active service, noting that personnel who dedicated their careers to protecting lives and property deserved financial security and dignity in retirement.

The renewed intervention has raised hopes among retired police officers that the proposed reforms, government approvals and adequate funding would translate into the prompt payment of verified arrears and improved retirement benefits.

Retired personnel have continued to express concerns over delays and administrative challenges associated with their entitlements, making the proposed reforms a significant step towards addressing their long-standing grievances.

The success of the initiative, however, will depend largely on the timely implementation of the committee’s recommendations, the availability of funds and the effectiveness of measures put in place to ensure transparency and accountability in the pension administration process.
