The Anambra State Police Command has arrested a man, identified as Chima Ofoeke, over the suspected murder of a 23-year-old woman, Mmesoma Umeorini, in Uga, Aguata Local Government Area of the state.

The arrest followed the disappearance of the deceased, whose mother had earlier reported to the Divisional Police Officer, Umuchu Division, that her daughter had been missing since October 16, 2026.

The mother reportedly raised the alarm after efforts to establish her daughter’s whereabouts proved unsuccessful, prompting police operatives to commence an investigation into the circumstances surrounding her disappearance.

The police, acting on intelligence, subsequently arrested Ofoeke in collaboration with members of the Agunechemba security outfit in Uga.

The suspect was identified as the deceased’s alleged former boyfriend.

According to a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer of the Anambra State Command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, preliminary interrogation indicated that the suspect allegedly confessed to killing the young woman following the breakdown of their relationship.

Ikenga disclosed that the suspect subsequently led detectives to the location where the victim’s remains were discovered and recovered.

The development has heightened concerns over the safety of young women and the growing need for effective responses to violence arising from troubled relationships.

Following the discovery, the Commissioner of Police, Anambra State Command, CP Nnanna Oji Ama, directed that the case be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Awka, for a comprehensive and diligent investigation.

The police commissioner, according to the statement, ordered the transfer to ensure that all relevant circumstances surrounding the incident were thoroughly examined and that justice could be pursued through the appropriate legal process.

The command reiterated its commitment to protecting lives and property, urging members of the public to promptly report missing persons and suspicious activities to the appropriate authorities.

It added that further developments would be communicated as the investigation progresses.

As of the time of filing this report, the police had not disclosed further details about the circumstances of the alleged killing or whether the suspect had been formally charged in court.
