UGHELLI- Covid -19 Tax Force officials yesterday narrowly escaped being killed by suspected hoodlums in Ughelli market, Ughelli North local government area of Delta State following an attack on a team during a COVID-19 sensitization awareness outing.
It was gathered that a total of 11 police personnel mostly women, a Delta State Traffic Management Agency, DESTMA operative and some officials of the Ughelli North council suffered various degrees of injuries during the incident.
A source who spoke to the Pointer on anonymous condition alleged that the security team were deployed as security for the Ughelli North COVID-19 task force setup by the council chairman, Chief Godwin Adode to implement the use of facemasks as part of measures to curb the spread of COVID-19 in the area.
An injured policewoman held that, “The task force officials had gone to sensitize traders at Ughelli main market and implement the ban on social distancing and use of face mask when they were attacked by the hoodlums who overpowered them.
“We had just arrived the area when out of nowhere; the boys came out and attacked us. We had to flee the scene and returned to the police station.”
A visit to the scene of the incident by the Pointer, a truck load of the Nigeria Army attached to the 222 battation was stationed at Ughelli main market to restore peace.
All efforts to speak with the chairman of the tax force, Mr. Sunny Ighokena was not successful as call to his mobile line was not reachable as the time of this report.
