The Anambra State Police Command has commenced an investigation into an alleged child trafficking incident following the rescue of a 37-year-old woman from an angry mob at a private hospital in Obosi.
The suspect, identified as Anurika Nweme, was rescued by operatives attached to the Awada Divisional Police Headquarters at Divine Mercy Hospital, located along Eze Iweka Road, Awada, Obosi, after she was accused of suspicious activities within the hospital premises.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, preliminary reports indicate that the suspect allegedly gained access to the hospital’s maternity ward on the afternoon of June 23, 2026, dressed in clothing resembling that of a nurse. She was reportedly observed making secret video recordings of newborn babies, raising suspicion among hospital staff and visitors.
When questioned, the woman allegedly claimed to be a staff member of the hospital. However, management of Divine Mercy Hospital reportedly denied any affiliation with her after conducting internal verification, prompting staff and other persons at the facility to raise the alarm.
The situation quickly escalated as an irate crowd attempted to attack the suspect before police operatives intervened and rescued her from possible mob action. She has since been taken into protective custody.
The police spokesperson disclosed that the suspect is assisting investigators with information that could help identify other individuals who may be connected to the alleged incident. He added that the Command has launched a full-scale investigation and assured members of the public that further details would be made available as the investigation progresses.
