The Ughelli North Local Government Legislative House has suspended Councillor Hon. Israel Palmer for three months over allegations of anti-party activities, high-handedness and gross misconduct.
The decision was reached during the House’s plenary on Thursday, July 2, 2026, following deliberations by members on the allegations brought against the councillor.
According to the resolution of the House, the suspension is intended to preserve discipline and ensure adherence to the rules governing the conduct of members of the legislative arm of the council.
The House alleged that Palmer’s actions were inconsistent with the principles and expectations of the council and the political platform under which he was elected.
With the suspension taking immediate effect, the councillor is barred from participating in legislative proceedings and other official activities of the House for the duration of the sanction, unless the decision is reviewed.
Contacted, Hon. Palmer described the action as illegal and unconstitutional as his personal issues with a House of Assembly Member ought not to be discussed in public.
He said, “On the suspension, it is an injustice because nobody signed for my suspension and before you can suspend a sitting Councilor three quarter of the House must be in majority but in this case it was not so.
“They said, I insulted a sitting member of the House of Assembly and I am challenging them to provide evidence of me insulting the Member of the Delta State House of Assembly, name withheld.
“Or are they saying if I have a personal issues with the member, must they bring to thr Hallow Chamber for discussion. As far as I am concerned, my suspension is illegal.”
