Democracy Day: Akpodiete Urges Commitment To Rule Of Law, Accountability

Prof. (Olorogun) Alexander O. Akpodiete has called on Nigerians to deepen their commitment to democratic values, saying the nation’s progress depends on adherence to the rule of law, accountability, transparency, and active citizen participation.

In his Democracy Day message to commemorate June 12, Akpodiete described the occasion as a celebration of the resilience, courage, and enduring spirit of Nigerians in their pursuit of democratic governance and national development.

According to him, “Democracy is strongest when the rule of law prevails, when institutions are respected, when elections are credible, and when citizens have confidence that their participation can shape the future of their communities and our nation,” he stated

“Today, we celebrate not just a system of government, but the enduring spirit of the Nigerian people, their resilience, courage, and belief that every voice matters.

“As we reflect on our democratic journey, let us recommit ourselves to the values of accountability, transparency, inclusion, peaceful engagement, and service to the people.

“Our democracy may not be perfect, but it remains our collective responsibility to strengthen it for future generations.

“May we continue to build a Nigeria where opportunity is expanded, justice is accessible, leadership is accountable, and every citizen can contribute meaningfully to national development.”

Prof Akpo, a legal scholar and AI governance expert, further disclosed that democracy derives its strength from strong institutions, credible elections, and public confidence and I urged citizens and leaders alike to recommit themselves to the principles that sustain democratic governance.

While acknowledging that Nigeria’s democracy is still evolving, he stressed the need for collective efforts to strengthen democratic institutions and preserve the gains made since the return to civilian rule.

“This is a time Nigerians should be hopeful of the future with the opportunities, access to justice, and promoting accountable leadership.

Akpodiete also extended his goodwill to Nigerians at home and abroad, while offering prayers for peace, unity, and progress across the country.

“Happy Democracy Day to all Nigerians at home and across the world. God bless Delta State. God bless Delta Central. God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.” he added.
