The Delta State Police Command has arrested a popular content creator, Ifeanyi Ogbonna, popularly known as “Odogwu of Asaba,” over the alleged rape of a 20-year-old woman who later died after allegedly ingesting a toxic substance.
The Command, in a statement by its Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, said the arrest followed a petition alleging that the deceased travelled to Asaba on June 1, 2026, at the invitation of the suspect, who had promised to train her in content creation through a programme advertised on his social media platforms.
Police said the suspect allegedly took the woman to a hotel on her arrival in Asaba, where he allegedly raped and physically assaulted her.
According to the statement, the victim later returned home in a distressed state and narrated her ordeal to her parents. She also reportedly recorded a video detailing the alleged incident and the emotional trauma she suffered afterwards.
The police said the young woman subsequently ingested a toxic substance in an apparent suicide attempt and later died despite efforts to save her.
Following the petition, the Commissioner of Police, Delta State Command, CP Yemi Oyeniyi, directed the Area Command, Effurun, to commence an immediate and thorough investigation into the matter.
The statement said operatives swiftly swung into action, leading to the arrest of Ogbonna, who reportedly made useful statements during preliminary interrogation, while investigations continue to establish the full circumstances surrounding the case.
CP Oyeniyi assured the family of the deceased and members of the public that the Command would conduct a painstaking investigation and ensure that justice is served.
He reiterated the Command’s commitment to professionalism, fairness and the rule of law, stressing that no aspect of the allegations would be overlooked and that appropriate legal action would be taken in line with the outcome of the investigation.
