Delta Central Senatorial aspirant of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Prof. Alexander Akpodiete, has expressed sadness over the tragic derailment involving the Warri–Itakpe Train Service near Agbor, Delta State, which claimed lives and left several passengers injured.
Akpodiete, in a statement issued on Tuesday, described the incident as a heartbreaking tragedy that has plunged affected families into grief, as he renewed calls for improved maintenance and safety standards across Nigeria’s railway network.
The NDC chieftain extended his condolences to the families of the deceased and sympathize with those who sustained injuries in the accident, praying for their speedy recovery.
According to him, “The news of the train derailment near Agbor is deeply disturbing and painful as i express my heartfelt condolences to the families who lost their loved ones in this unfortunate incident.
“I also sympathise with those who sustained injuries and pray for their quick recovery.
“The unfortunate incident is a direct call on authorities to place greater emphasis on the maintenance of railway infrastructure and operational safety in order to avert future tragedies.
“The nation’s railway system has become an increasingly important means of transportation for Nigerians due to its affordability and relative convenience and the safety of passengers must remain a top priority.”
Akpodiete urged the Nigerian Railway Corporation and relevant government agencies to carry out a comprehensive investigation into the cause of the derailment and ensure that all necessary corrective measures are implemented and those responsible should be punished.
“The railway sector remains vital to Nigeria’s economic growth and transportation development investment in infrastructure and it must go hand in hand with proper maintenance and continuous monitoring of facilities and equipment.
“Preventive maintenance should be a non-negotiable aspect of railway operations, we must not wait for disasters to occur before taking action.
“The lives of Nigerians who rely on rail transportation daily must be protected through effective safety measures and operational efficiency,” he stated.
The Delta Central senatorial hopeful further called on the Federal Government to strengthen oversight of transportation infrastructure and ensure that agencies responsible for railway operations are adequately funded and equipped to meet global safety standards.
While praying for the repose of the souls of the deceased, Akpodiete urged Nigerians to support the affected families and remain united during this difficult period.
