Former Deputy President of the Senate and Delta Central Senatorial candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, has condemned the violent disruption of the party’s One Million-Man March in Uvwie Local Government Area of Delta State, calling for an immediate investigation into the incident.
In a statement issued on Saturday and obtained from his verified Facebook handle, Senator Omo-Agege described the attack on supporters of the party during the procession as “violent and unprovoked,” alleging that more than 100 persons sustained injuries and are currently receiving treatment in hospitals.
The NDC governorship candidate, Deacon Chris Iyovwaye, had led thousands of supporters in the march across parts of Warri and Uvwie councils.
According to Omo-Agege, the procession was initially billed to commence at Angle Park in Warri South Local Government Area, but party members allegedly had to relocate following claims by persons identified as supporters of the All Progressives Congress (APC) that the venue was already designated for an APC event.
He further alleged that similar objections were raised at the Total Filling Station axis, forcing the procession to move towards the Uvwie junction, where, according to him, the participants allegedly came under attack.
The former lawmaker claimed that incidents of violence occurred at Ugborokoko, Jakpa Road and Urhuomarho areas, with reports that gunshots were fired at some points during the procession.
Omo-Agege also alleged that one suspect, popularly known as “Black Moses,” was apprehended during the incident and handed over to the police after allegedly being found with an AK-47 rifle.
He further alleged that a human rights activist, Efemena Umukoro, who reportedly disarmed the suspect, might be facing arrest, urging security agencies to act impartially.
While extending sympathy to those injured, Omo-Agege commended NDC supporters for what he described as their restraint and determination to complete the march despite the alleged attacks.
He called on the Inspector-General of Police, the Department of State Services (DSS), and other relevant security agencies to launch a comprehensive investigation into the incident, including allegations of police inaction and the circumstances surrounding the arrest of the suspect.
“The investigation must establish who organised the attack, who supplied any weapons used, who financed or sponsored the attackers, and whether any political actors were involved,” he stated.
Omo-Agege also appealed to youths in Delta State to resist being used as instruments of political violence, warning that no political ambition should be worth the loss of lives or destruction of the future of young people.
He reiterated that the NDC would remain committed to peaceful and issue-based campaigns ahead of the 2027 elections.
The Delta State Government had earlier respond by condemning the incident by calling on security agents for investigation.
