The Anambra State Commissioner of Police, CP Nnanna Oji Ama, yesterday ordered a thorough and impartial investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting incident at the Head Bridge, Onitsha, which occurred during an attempted arrest.
CP Nnanna, who addressed an anxious crowd in the area, said the immediate priority of the command was to ensure that those injured in the incident received adequate medical attention and recovered fully.
The incident reportedly occurred when some suspects allegedly resisted arrest, resulting in a confrontation during which firearms were discharged and some persons sustained gunshot injuries.
Following the incident, the Commissioner visited the victims at the hospital, where he assured them of the support of the police command.
He also pledged to personally ensure that their medical expenses were taken care of.
CP Nnanna, while ordering the investigation, directed that particular attention be paid to the circumstances that led to the discharge of the firearm.
He said the investigation must establish the facts surrounding the incident and determine appropriate action based on its findings.
The Commissioner appealed to residents and other members of the public to remain calm and peaceful, urging them to allow the investigation to run its course.
He reiterated the command’s commitment to professionalism, accountability, respect for human life and strict observance of the rule of law.
Meanwhile, normalcy has returned to the Head Bridge area following the de-escalation of the situation.
The command said the free flow of vehicular and human movement in the area has been restored.
The Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Anambra State Command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, disclosed this in a statement yesterday.
The command urged members of the public to remain peaceful and cooperate with security personnel as investigations into the incident continue.
