Nigeria African First Journalist To Interview Jimmy Carter, Sir Othihiwa Is Dead

Veteran Journalist, and former Daily Times, AIT General Manager, Sir Odafe Othihiwa Is Dead. He passed on this morning at the age of 77. He left an indelible mark in Journalism in Nigeria as a news guru.

According to statement by the family, Sir Odafe Othihiwa, a knight of St. Augustine until his death was a father who will be missed by all.

The Veteran was Lagos State Editor of the Nigerian Observer for many years. And in Daily Times Of Nigeria Plc, he served in various capacities as City Editor; Chief Reporter, Head of Abuja Bureau of the Times Group, Assistant News Editor, GM, Corporate Affairs.


He joined AIT as General Manager, Current Affairs. While in retirement, his pen never dried up until death came calling.

He is also an alumni of the United States’s Times of Grainville, The Oakland Tribune, The Atlanta Daily World and The Seattle Times.

He was the first African journalist to interview former US President Jimmy Carter in 1978.

In 1982, Othihiwa was honoured with the award of the Knighthood order of St. Augustine by the Head of the World Anglican Communion, Archbishop of Canterbury, Most Rev Robert Runcie.

Burial arrangements will be announce by the Othihiwa family later.
