FG alerts public on outbreak of birdflu in 7 states, FCT

The Federal Government on Friday alerted the public to the outbreak of Avian Influenza or Birdflu in the FCT and seven states of the country. Dr Gideon Mshelbwala, the Director of Veterinary and Pest Control Services, Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development raised the alert at a meeting with state Commissioners of Agriculture in Abuja on Friday. 44 Nigerian, Ghanaian migrants perish in Sahara Desert

More than 40 migrants from Nigeria and Ghana have died in the Sahara Desert after their truck broke down in arid northern Niger. The Red Cross said the migrants, most of whom have not been identified, died this week. Economic recession looms in South Africa

South Africa’s economy may be headed towards technical recession as growth rate has shrunk and unemployment has hit levels not seen in 14 years. According to a report by Reuters, the economy shrank 0.3 percent in the last quarter of 2016 and if it shows a contraction when domestic product results are released next week Tuesday, Africa’s most industrialised economy will be in technical recession. FG Uncovers N700bn Contract Scam In Niger Delta Ministry

The Federal Executive Council (FEC) yesterday received a report on the probe of activities in the Niger Delta Ministry between 2009 and 2015, which uncovered massive contract scams from the N700 billion released to the ministry within the period. According to the report, despite the huge sums paid to contractors, only a dismal 12 per cent of contract performance was recorded, even as government now plans to recover the outstanding balance from the contractors or have them prosecuted.
