World Environment Day 2026: Bayelsa Govt To Tackle Climate Change, Environmental Degradation

Yenegoa -Bayelsa State marked World Environment Day 2026 with a call for bold climate action, blending policy, culture, and youth engagement under the global theme “Inspired by Nature, for Climate, for Our Future”.

 

Governor Senator Douye Diri was represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Nimibofa Ayawei, who restated the administration’s commitment to tackling climate change and environmental degradation head-on.

 

In his remarks, Commissioner for Environment, Hon. Ebi Ben Ololo, commended Governor Diri for approving the state’s observance of World Environment Day 2026.

 

He described the approval as proof of the governor’s dedication to environmental sustainability, climate resilience, public awareness, and responsible stewardship of natural resources.

 

“The governor’s support created a platform for stakeholders to engage in meaningful dialogue and collective action toward a greener, more resilient Bayelsa,” Ololo said.

 

, Hon. Ololo expressed appreciation government functionaries and all Bayelsans who attended despite tight schedules.

 

A major highlight of the event was the distribution of economic trees by the Ministry of Environment to drive reforestation, protect biodiversity, and support green livelihoods across communities.

 

The ministry also recognized youth leadership in environmental stewardship through its “Cleanest Schools Award.” Bidiapolu Comprehensive Secondary School emerged first, St. Jude’s Girls Secondary School took second, and Best Breed International School placed third. The awards spotlight schools setting the benchmark for sanitation and environmental responsibility.

 

The ceremony gained cultural weight with a performance by the award-winning Bayelsa Cultural Dance Troupe. Using dance and drama, the troupe delivered a message on environmental preservation, linking Bayelsa’s heritage to the urgent need to protect its mangroves, rivers, and forests.

 

Dignitaries present included Senator Konbowei Friday Benson, HRM King Bubaraye Dakolo, Hon. Tare Porri, Hon. Dr. Gentle Emelah, Comr. Alagoa Morris, and other stakeholders.
