The Guild of Online Media Editors and Publishers of Nigeria, GOMEP-NG, has called on the Inspector-General of Police, IGP, and the Delta State Commissioner of Police to urgently investigate the circumstances surrounding the death of Mr Adeda Ekwevugbe Unity, a Level 16 civil servant with the Delta State Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education.
Unity, who was said to have served as a Deputy Director in the ministry, reportedly died under circumstances that have raised concerns among his family members, colleagues and associates.
GOMEP-NG, in a statement by its National President, Comrade Akpovoke Otiti, urged the police and other relevant authorities to thoroughly investigate allegations that Unity was assaulted before his death and to arrest and prosecute anyone found to be responsible.
According to the group, eyewitness accounts and reports from members of the deceased’s family indicated that Unity had left home for work before the incident.
The organisation said photographs and other reports made available to it had raised questions about the circumstances surrounding his death, stressing that the matter should not be treated lightly.
GOMEP-NG also called for an investigation into the alleged conduct of the Director of Examinations, whom it accused of recording the scene of the incident but allegedly refusing to make the video available.
The group urged the police to establish whether the video exists and, if so, secure it as potential evidence in the investigation.
Otiti said all persons who may have information concerning the incident should be invited and questioned by the appropriate authorities, while anyone found to have participated in the alleged assault or any act leading to Unity’s death should face the law.
He appealed to the IGP and the Delta State Commissioner of Police to ensure a transparent and credible investigation that would provide answers to the deceased’s family, colleagues and the wider public.
The group described Unity’s death as a painful loss to his family and colleagues, noting that he was a husband, son, brother, uncle and a serving civil servant.
GOMEP-NG stressed that its demand was for justice through due process and urged anyone with relevant photographs, video recordings or other evidence to submit them to the investigating authorities.
