Operatives of the Anambra State Police Command have arrested two suspected illicit drug dealers and recovered substances suspected to be cannabis sativa, methamphetamine and other illicit drugs worth N6.2 million, as well as N598,400 cash.
The arrests followed a raid on a suspected criminal hideout in Obosi, Idemili North Local Government Area of the state, in the early hours of Tuesday, August 11, 2026.
The operation, carried out by operatives attached to the Rapid Response Squad, Awkuzu, was based on credible intelligence on the activities of suspected illicit drug dealers operating in the area.
The suspects were identified by the police as 47-year-old Nzube Onyedikachukwu, alias “Onyeoma,” and 20-year-old Ugochukwu Azia.
According to a statement by the Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Anambra State Command, SP Ikenga Tochukwu, a search of the hideout led to the recovery of a large quantity of substances suspected to be Cannabis sativa, methamphetamine and other illicit drugs valued at N6.2 million.
Also recovered during the operation was the sum of N598,400 in cash.
The police said preliminary investigation indicated that the suspects were allegedly involved in the distribution of illicit drugs, while the location was reportedly being used as a gathering point by suspected criminal elements after carrying out their operations.
The Command said some of the suspected criminals fled the scene after sighting the police operatives.
The two arrested suspects are currently in police custody as investigation continues to establish the source and distribution network of the suspected illicit drugs.
The police are also working to identify other persons allegedly connected to the operation and determine the circumstances surrounding the cash recovered.
The operation is part of intensified security activities by the command following the directive of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, on sustained intelligence-led operations and the dismantling of criminal hideouts across the country.
The Commissioner of Police, Anambra State Command, CP Nnanna Oji Ama, said the command would sustain intelligence-led raids, targeted operations and proactive policing aimed at dismantling criminal hideouts and denying criminals safe havens in the state.
Ama also called on residents, traditional institutions, community leaders and other stakeholders to continue supporting the police with credible and timely information on suspicious persons, criminal activities and identified criminal hideouts.
He assured that such information would assist the command in strengthening its operations and making Anambra safer for residents and businesses.
