The new Commissioner of Police, Anambra State Command, CP Nnanna Oji Ama, has charged Area Commanders, Tactical Commanders, Divisional Police Officers (DPOs) and other sectional heads to take full responsibility for the security of their respective jurisdictions.
Nnanna gave the charge yesterday during his maiden security meeting with strategic officers of the command, as he moved to strengthen operational effectiveness, enhance public safety and improve the overall security architecture of the state.
The meeting, which brought together senior operational commanders and heads of various sections of the command, provided the new Commissioner with an opportunity to set out his operational priorities and expectations for the officers under his leadership.
The CP emphasised the need for proactive, intelligence-led and community-oriented policing, urging commanders to ensure effective deployment of personnel and resources towards preventing crime and responding promptly to emerging security threats.
He said the performance of strategic officers would be closely monitored, particularly in the areas of traffic management, maintenance of law and order, crime prevention and prompt response to security challenges.
According to him, leadership, visibility and operational control would remain critical benchmarks in assessing the performance of commanders across the state.
Nnanna also introduced awards and commendations for police officers who had distinguished themselves through exceptional performance, saying such recognition was necessary to motivate personnel and promote professionalism within the command.
However, he warned officers against unprofessional conduct, extortion, abuse of office and other practices capable of eroding public confidence in the police.
The Commissioner reminded personnel that they must operate strictly within the ambit of the law while upholding the highest standards of professionalism, discipline and accountability.
He further directed commanders to strengthen collaboration with other security agencies, community leaders, stakeholders and members of the public, noting that effective policing could only be achieved through collective responsibility and the timely exchange of credible intelligence.
The Commissioner maintained that security situations across the various jurisdictions would remain important indicators in determining the effectiveness of commanders, urging them to be proactive rather than reactive in tackling security challenges.
The meeting ended with a renewed commitment by the strategic officers to improve operational efficiency, strengthen traffic management, prevent crime and sustain peace and security across Anambra State.
