A tragic incident occurred at Taraba State Polytechnic, Jalingo, as a 100-level student, Iorhee Saanmoyol Paul, was electrocuted while hoisting a PDP flag during a student-led event. The metal pole used reportedly came into contact with a high-tension electricity cable, resulting in life-threatening injuries.
According to Blueprint newspaper, Paul was rushed to Gilead Hospital and later transferred to the National Orthopedic Hospital, where he battled for survival for weeks.
On June 19, 2025, doctors were forced to amputate both hands to save his life. The Taraba State government has since taken over his medical expenses.
Human rights advocates are now calling for long-term support, including prosthetic arms and vocational rehabilitation, to help the young student rebuild his life.
The incident has sparked renewed calls for improved safety measures at public gatherings near power installations.
