UGHELLI—The Delta State Police Command has debunked reports alleging that a police officer was driving the vehicle involved in a recent road accident in Ughelli, describing the claim as false and a deliberate attempt to smear the image of the Nigeria Police Force.
The Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, said he personally met with and interviewed the driver, who is a suspect, as well as the owner of the vehicle involved in the accident, to ascertain the true circumstances surrounding the incident.
Edafe stated that the outcome of the interview clearly showed that the driver was not a police officer, contrary to claims circulating on social media.
He condemned the report, describing it as a malicious fabrication orchestrated to discredit the Force and mislead members of the public.
According to him, the Command would spare no effort in tracking down those responsible for originating and circulating the false information.
“Following these rumours, which might be from the pit of hell and are a deliberate attempt to tarnish the image of the Force by claiming that it was a policeman driving the vehicle involved in the accident in Ughelli, I met with the driver, suspect and owner of the vehicle involved in the accident and interviewed him,” Edafe said.
He added: “The Command will go all out to identify and deal with those who originated this fake news and ensure that they are brought to justice.”
The police image maker warned against the spread of unverified information, stressing that fake news not only misleads the public but also undermines confidence in law enforcement agencies.
He urged residents to verify information through official police channels before sharing such reports, assuring that the Command remains committed to professionalism, accountability and ensuring that those behind the misinformation face the full weight of the law.
