Anambra Police Hail Community Support In Arrest of 20-Year-Old Over Father’s Alleged Murder

 

The Anambra State Police Command has arrested a 20-year-old man, identified as Pascal Ogbogu, for allegedly killing his 56-year-old father with a machete in Abatete, Idemili North Local Government Area of the state.

The arrest followed a coordinated effort by the police, family members and members of the Abatete Vigilante, after the suspect reportedly fled the scene of the incident.

According to a statement issued on Wednesday by the Police Public Relations Officer, Anambra State Command, SP Ikenga Tochukwu, the incident occurred on the evening of August 25, 2026.

The suspect was alleged to have attacked his father with a machete before fleeing the scene.

Following a distress call, operatives from the Eziowelle Police Division mobilised to the scene alongside relatives of the deceased and members of the Abatete Vigilante.

On arrival, they reportedly found the victim lying lifeless in a pool of blood, with a deep machete wound to his throat.

The deceased’s body was subsequently evacuated to a mortuary, where it was deposited for preservation and autopsy.

The police said Ogbogu was apprehended in the early hours of Wednesday, August 26, following a coordinated search operation involving security personnel and members of the community.

The Command said timely information supplied by residents and the cooperation of community members played a significant role in tracking and locating the suspect.

Reacting to the development, the Commissioner of Police, CP Nnanna Oji Ama, commended the family members, residents, vigilante personnel and police operatives for their prompt response and cooperation.

Oji Ama stressed the importance of community participation and timely information sharing in combating crime, saying effective partnership between the police and local communities remained critical to protecting lives and property.

The police commissioner also commiserated with the family of the deceased, while directing that the case be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation.

He said the investigation would establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and determine all relevant facts.

The CP assured the deceased’s family and members of the public that the investigation would be conducted professionally and thoroughly in accordance with the law.

He added that the suspect would be subjected to due process upon the conclusion of the investigation.

The police urged members of the public to continue providing timely and useful information to security agencies to enable them respond effectively to threats to lives and property.
