Police Foil Suspected Bank Robbery Attack In Ughelli

Tension is currently high as residents of Ughelli Metropolis in Ughelli North local government area of Delta State ate yet to recover from fear following a foiled robbery attack on a new generation bank by security agents.
It was gathered that the gunmen had stormed the new generation bank, Zenith Bank at along market road, Ughelli with a Toyota Rav 4 at about 10-11am on Monday.
According to a customer of the bank who spoke to newsmen on anonymous condition held that, “We were chased back by security guard as i narrowly escape being shot by them.
She said, “I was coming to the bank to do some transaction when I saw people running and scampering for safety following a sporadic shooting.
As at the time of this report, all banks in Ughelli metropolis were closed before 12noon with a notice in one of the banks which states that, ‘Dear customer we shall be opening by 9am to 2pm as from tomorrow, (Tuesday) till further notice’.
Efforts to contact the Bank Manager for comments was not successful but a staff of bank who spoke to newsmen disclosed that the the movement of the armed men was quickly noticed by passerby and local vigilante and the security guards were alerted.
The staff further disclosed that the robbers had earlier gone to first bank but could not gain access and they came to our bank, two of the suspects were discussing with the security guards in other to divert their attention before their vehicle was noticed and the Mobil police had to shot into the air to scare them away.
“Their movement was suspected by local vigilante right from First to Zenith Bank in the area and they were monitored before the locals raised alarm that attracted the mobile police on duty”
The Delta State Police Acting Public Relations Officer, Edafe Bright when contacted said, “That information was not entirely true, there was no attempt on any bank, but there was a suspicious movement and the police men went after them, so we cannot substantiate that it was an attempt to rob the bank.”
The security source at Ughelli Area command held that, “the suspected armed robbers traced their victim to the bank but they did not succeed”.
Meanwhile, a yet to be identified man was on Friday shot dead at Ahwinawhi street in Ughelli. Though it could not be confirmed if the killing was cult related.
A source in the area who spoke on anonymous condition disclosed that the victim was shot at a very close range inside his Toyota Camry at about 7:30 to 8pm.
