The people of Oteri-Ughelli community in Ughelli North local government area of Delta State have elected Hon. Erakporfoke Odibo as the new President of the community in a keenly contested election amidst tight security.
Hon. Erakpofoke pulled 741 votes to defeat his closest contestant, Mr. Godwin Onomuvwe who got 635 votes in an election described as the most peaceful, transparent and fairest in the history of the community.
The election which held on Saturday, 8th of August at the Oteri-Ughelli Town Hall, Ughelli, Ughelli North local government area of Delta State, witnessed a large turnout of indigenes of Oteri-Ughelli Community casting their votes amidst tight security.
The chairman of the electoral committee Hon. Emmanuel Alu, while officially presenting Hon. Odibo with his certificate of return, disclosed that three contestants purchased form for position of Community President, adding that one of the contestant who could not meet the constitutional requirements was disqualified.
“One of the contestant, Mr. Emerhi Benedict was disqualified because he did not meet the requirements and his disqualification was endorsed by the council of elders.
“Emerhi took us to court to stop the process but the court saw our plea and gave us releave to go ahead with the election as schedule. So, I’m happy we were able to conduct the election successfully and today we have a new Community President in Oteri-Ughelli.”
Speaking after his presentation of certificate of return, Hon. Erakpofoke Odibo thanked the people of the community for voting him as their President, promising to work tirelessly to move the community to the next level.
He called for continued support from members of the community, including his fellow contestant in moving the community forward.
The Oteri-Ughelli President was sworn in by Dr. Esegine Jonah (JP), on behalf of the Chief Judge of Delta State, Justice Marshal Mukoro with a charged to the new President to always uphold the constitution of the community above any personal or financial sentiments.
